Chapter 9, Political Education Neglected, of The Mis-Education of the Negro, written by Carter G. Woodson, discusses the inequity in education and how the Negro is controlled and enslaved by political and educational systems. “Even the few Negros who are elected to office are often similarly uniformed and show a lack of vision. They have given little attention to the weighty problems of the nation; and in the legislative bodies to which they are elected, they restrict themselves as a rule to matters of special concern to the Negros themselves…( Woodson, 94) This chapter is significant for school leaders in terms of Standard 6. Effective educational leaders explain how political systems and institutional framework shapes the community, explain various theories of change and conflict resolution, and advocate for equitable policies and opportunities for all students. It is essential for school leaders to be connected to the larger context, and have the critical thinking skills to respond and influence it. Chapter 9 calls attention to the great social injustices that affect Negros. “Where such things come into the teaching in more advanced work they are presented as matters of concern to a particular element rather than as functions in with all citizens may participate.” (Woodson, 88) In the previous quote Woodson analyzes how inequity is reinforced and its effects on the community.
1) What important document stated "We hold these truths to be self-evident?"
The Declaration of Independence is the important document that stated “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men were created equal”, however “all men” truly meant all white, upper class, males, an excluded non-whites, the poor, and women.
2) Who said the quote "Anyone who expects to live in a state civilization and be ignorant/free, you expect what never was and what never will be free?"
Thomas Jefferson is responsible for the profound quote; those are that are free and not enslaved are truly not free; They are mentally enslaved, especially by the education system.
3) What amendment is about education?
Ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, the Tenth Amendment specifies that “the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Public education was not written into constitution, it's a states' right.
