Compiled Messages Topic: Class Activity from CAU Panther Student Paper: 10/26/2009 Date: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 Subject: CAU Introduces New Safety Measures Author: Desiree Glover In the CAU Panther article "CAU Introduces New Safety Measures", many correlations can be made with Educational Leadership standards. In the article, CAU President Dr. Carlton Brown seems to have had 2 main objectives following the tragic death of Jasmine Lynn:

1)To communicate with the campus and community
2)To collaborate with the AUC and the community

He effectively modeled standard 4.0. (Candidates who complete the program are educational leaders who have the knowledge and ability to promote the success of all students by collaborating with families and other community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.) Many indicators were evidenced by Dr. Browns actions and comments including but not limited to:

-Develop a comprehensive program of community relations and demonstrate ability to work with the media.

-Demonstrate the ability to collaborate with community agencies to integrate health, social, and other services.

-Use school resources and social service agencies to serve the community.

-Demonstrate ways to use public resources and funds appropriately to encourage communities to provide new resources to address student problems.

Dr. Brown also modeled Situational Approach and Contigency Theory with his immediate and effective response to the tragic events. I think that if there is more activity and awareness between the AUC and the surrounding community, there will be less opportunity for future incidences like that with Jasmine Lynn to occur again. The community surrounding the AUC could become more attractive if there were programs set in place by the university to clean, repair, and manage the goings on in the neighborhoods. There would be an economic increase if students had incentives to frequent the surrounding businesses and even seek employment or work study there. If the community were to be separated from the campus environment completely, it turns the AUC into an unwelcoming fortress instead of a place of education, safety, and culture that brings life, energy and money to the community. I do not disagree with Dr. Brown that security measures need to be increased, but I don’t see how closing off a few streets and requiring students keep their IDs visible (because they will have difficulty mandating this rule) will present a safer environment. I think that security increase is a good idea. Because fewer crimes tend to be committed in places that are cleaner, more attractive, and maintain a cohesive community environment, I believe that putting more energy into making those factors a reality are more attainable and realistic. None of the changes will take place over night, but some changes are more likely than others.
Standard 4 offers a few other descriptions that support my ideas:
c. Use public information and research-based knowledge to collaborate with families and the community.
d. Create frameworks for school, family, business, community, government, and higher education partnerships using community relations models.
e. Develop various methods of outreach aimed at business, religious, political, and service organizations.
f. Involve families and other stakeholders in school decision-making processes.

While establishing long range community involvement plans are great, it is even greater to meet the immediate need of all parties concerned and impacted. Since Miss Lynn's death there has been increased police presence which is critical to the safety of staff and students on our campus. By displaying the key leadership stregths stated in standard 4, Dr. Brown has re-mobilized an active network of community awareness, parent involvement and police action all at the same time. That is an incredible fete, althougn to some, to little to late. Further by operationalizing a new safety plan Dr. Brown formally creates the needed platform for the proposed framework of the school, family, business, community, government, and AUC partnership to function as a viable community relations model, which can be solidified and duplicated by others. In addition, by operationalizing the new safety plan Dr. Brown has continued AUC's goal to develop and implement community outreach opportunities that serve community business, religious, political, and service organizations.
This intun will impact future involvement with families and other stakeholders in school decision-making processes.

Topic: Class Activity from CAU Panther Student Paper: 10/26/2009 Date: Thursday, December 10, 2009 Subject: Re:CAU Introduces New Safety Measures Author: Desiree Glover Contingency theory is very important in terms of crisis management because a leader's style has to match the context of the situation. Crisis management involves being able to appropriately address the situation, while considering all factors. Dr. Brown displayed a high level of contingency intelligence when he mobilized community resources and communicated with stakeholders in a timely manner. His leadership style was effetively matched to the situation at hand. As a new leader of CAU, I believe he exhibited all of the qualities the University values and respects in a leader, particularly being able to address unique situations effectively.
